Multiple Earthquakes Rattle Southern Mexico

A series of earthquakes, including a 5.7 magnitude tremor, have struck southern Mexico over the past several days, with residents reporting shaking in Oaxaca and Mexico City. The seismic activity highlights the region’s vulnerability to earthquakes and has prompted safety checks and alerts.

The most recent significant quake, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, occurred on Sunday, February 8, 2026, and was centered 20 kilometers (approximately 12 miles) west of Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca, according to the National Seismological Service (Servicio Sismológico Nacional). The tremor occurred at 3:34:12 PM local time at a depth of 22.5 kilometers (approximately 14 miles).

On February 9, 2026, more than 20 earthquakes were recorded across the country, with a magnitude 4.1 quake surprising residents in the eastern part of Oaxaca, lineadirectaportal.com reports.

Earlier on February 10, 2026, at 4:48:39 AM local time, a magnitude 3.7 earthquake struck 123 kilometers (approximately 76 miles) southeast of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, at a depth of 10 kilometers (approximately 6 miles). The National Seismological Service reported the epicenter’s coordinates as 15.136° latitude and -94.81° longitude. The Servicio Sismológico Nacional, affiliated with the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s Institute of Geophysics, is monitoring the ongoing seismic activity.

Other recent tremors recorded on February 10, 2026, include a magnitude 2.2 quake 19 kilometers (approximately 12 miles) southwest of Pichucalco, Chiapas, at 4:39:09 AM, and a magnitude 3.3 quake 5 kilometers (approximately 3 miles) southeast of Cd. Altamirano, Guerrero, at 4:15:26 AM. A magnitude 5.7 earthquake was also recorded on February 8, 2026, 19 kilometers (approximately 12 miles) northeast of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, prompting the activation of safety protocols in Mexico City, milenio.com reported.

Officials in Mexico City have stated that, as of February 10, no damage has been reported in the capital following the recent seismic events. Municipios Puebla reports that the country has experienced more than 20 earthquakes since the start of the week.
