MG Motor is responding to consumer feedback with a significant overhaul of the interior and software for its popular MG4 electric hatchback, previewed recently in Brazil. The updates come as the automaker aims to maintain momentum in a competitive European EV market-where the MG4 sold over 120,000 units in 2022 and 2023 combined-and address criticisms that have impacted sales amid growing competition. The redesigned cabin borrows elements from the larger MGS5 model, signaling a broader effort to elevate the MG4’s overall quality and user experience.

MG Motor is addressing criticisms of its popular MG4 electric hatchback with a significant interior and software overhaul, recently unveiled in Brazil. The updates aim to bolster the vehicle’s appeal in a competitive European market, where over 70,000 units were sold in 2023 and over 50,000 in 2022.

While the MG4 has found success as one of the most popular Chinese-made vehicles in Europe, sales have declined this year as more competitors enter the EV space. Early feedback on the MG4 often focused on the quality of its interior and the functionality of its software. The redesigned interior, previewed in Brazil, borrows elements from the larger MGS5 model.

In China, the original MG4 has been discontinued and replaced with a second-generation model featuring a larger footprint and front-wheel drive. While the new generation is slated for release in the Czech Republic next year, the original MG4 will continue to be sold alongside a facelifted version coming to Europe. This refresh is expected to concentrate on the areas that received the most criticism – namely, the cabin experience.

The Brazilian reveal showcases an exterior that remains unchanged, but the interior has been completely revamped, adopting the design language of the MGS5. Both vehicles share the same Nebula platform and underlying technology. This move represents a strategic effort to elevate the MG4’s interior quality and user experience.

The updated interior features a more refined design, including the return of physical controls for the climate system and a larger 12.8-inch touchscreen display. Software improvements also allow for easier disabling of driver-assistance features. Engineers report the software is significantly more stable in the MGS5, addressing long-standing complaints about the MG4’s system performance.

The facelift for the MG4 includes a new steering wheel, a revised center console with a rotary gear selector, and improved seating. Hard plastics on the dashboard have been replaced with padded materials in select areas. A new two-tone brown and beige color scheme is also available. The changes reflect a broader trend in the EV market towards improved interior quality and user experience.

The Brazilian reveal showcases all trim levels, including the Xpower variant, with the new interior. While the underlying technology remains unchanged, MG Motor has not yet confirmed whether the same updates will be implemented in Europe. The facelifted model is expected to go on sale early next year, though its availability in the Czech market remains unconfirmed.
