Argentine Biologist Missing in Southern France Since January
Family members of Juan Ignacio Debandi Álvarez are urgently seeking public assistance to locate the 36-year-old Argentine national who has not been heard from since mid-January 2026.
Debandi Álvarez was last seen on January 18 in Cassis, a coastal town near Marseille in southern France. His last known contact with family occurred on January 11 via video call, after which all communication ceased.
Originally from General Rodríguez in Argentina’s Buenos Aires Province, Debandi Álvarez holds a degree in biology and spent eight years working as a laboratory assistant professor at the National University of Luján. He later worked for two years as a production manager at a poultry company before relocating to Europe.
After living in Barcelona, Spain, he moved to Ireland in late April 2024, residing in Drogheda where he was employed as a worker in a meat-related industry. He resigned from that position in mid-November 2025 with plans to move to Denmark, though those plans were never realized.
His sister, María Florencia Debandi, described him as someone who deeply enjoyed nature and often spent extended periods traveling across Europe to explore historical sites. “As a biologist, he loved observing and enjoying nature. It was common for him to dedicate a lot of time to traveling and visiting places with so much historical content,” she said. “Sometimes he’d say he ‘hung out,’ but it was usually just a few days — not anything like this.”
The family began actively searching for him in mid-February, noting that while he occasionally delayed responses due to his reserved nature, the current silence is highly unusual and concerning.
Authorities in France have not released public updates on the investigation and no further details about his disappearance have been confirmed.
The case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by families of missing persons abroad, particularly when communication gaps arise in foreign countries with differing legal and investigative procedures.
Anyone with information about Juan Ignacio Debandi Álvarez’s whereabouts is urged to contact local authorities or reach out to his family through the social media appeals they have launched.
