The future of Mjällby AIF forward Mamadou Manneh remains uncertain after multiple potential transfers fell through during the recent window, leaving both the club and player frustrated. Despite reported agreements with clubs in Greece and England, and continued interest from the UK, a deal failed to materialize before the deadline, prompting the swedish club’s sporting director to publicly express his exasperation. Manneh, who has been linked with a move throughout the summer, is now expected to return to Sweden as Mjällby explores alternative options including potential moves to Turkey or Major League Soccer. The situation highlights the complexities of international player transfers and the impact on athletes caught in protracted negotiations.
A potential move to Greek side Olympiakos fell through this summer, followed by a reported agreement with Championship club Birmingham. Yet, Mjällby AIF have once again been unable to finalize a transfer for forward Mamadou Manneh, despite continued interest from clubs in the United Kingdom.
The Swedish club’s sporting director, Hasse Larsson, expressed his frustration while speaking to reporters from the team’s training camp in Portugal. “I can’t take it anymore. There’s no point,” he said.
Larsson, who indicated he’s never experienced such a drawn-out situation in his role, had hoped a deal would materialize before the transfer window closed. He revealed that at least two English clubs were pursuing Manneh on deadline day.
“We haven’t been given a reason why it didn’t happen with one of them, and we couldn’t reach an economic agreement with the other,” Larsson explained.
When asked about potential issues arising during Manneh’s medical examination, Larsson declined to comment. “I don’t want to comment on that.”
Larsson spoke with Manneh earlier Wednesday and reported the player was understandably disappointed. “He’s not doing well. And that’s understandable.”
Current plans call for Manneh to return to Sweden from England. “We’ll sit down and talk with him. I think we’re usually pretty good at supporting players,” Larsson added.
While the primary transfer window has closed, some opportunities remain. Mjällby is still hoping to sell Manneh this winter, should a suitable offer emerge.
“Turkey or MLS, or something like that could be options. We’re not particularly keen on Turkey, but if a really serious offer comes in, it could be considered,” Larsson stated.
