In an exclusive interview, the mother stated she was unaware her son was using drugs and that he was friends with the victim. “I can’t imagine what happened,” she said.

The case has gripped Romania, and the mother’s emotional account offers a glimpse into the events surrounding the shocking crime. She added that she has lived in fear since being stripped of parental rights and learning of the allegations against her son.

Here is the full interview:

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: You are the mother of the 13-year-old boy. Have you noticed anything strange in your child’s behavior recently? Did you know he was using drugs?

Mother of the Suspect: I didn’t find anything strange, I didn’t notice absolutely anything. My child was normal, he behaved normally, everything was okay. I didn’t know (that he was using drugs), and no one told me anything about it. Neither the school informed me, I didn’t know if he was using drugs or not.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Where were you on the night of the crime?

Mother of the Suspect: I was at work on the night of the crime. I left for work at 8:45, caught the bus at 9:00, and on Tuesday morning at 4:00 a.m., the police called me to come home. I wasn’t given any information about why I needed to come home. I didn’t know anything at all. I left work and came home, and when I arrived, I saw so many cars in the yard, in the house, everywhere. I kept asking, but no one would tell me anything, I didn’t know what was happening, I wasn’t given any information. After that, I went to Timișoara, and only there, after the boy’s statement was taken, did I learn everything that had happened.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Did your son tell you anything? Do you know what happened there?

Mother of the Suspect: I don’t know anything at all. My son was taken, he was in a police car, I was in another car. We couldn’t communicate with each other. I didn’t see my son again until the police station, when his statement was taken, and that’s when I learned what had happened.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Can you tell me what happened?

Mother of the Suspect: I can’t say because what he told me is in the police file.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Were the boys friends? Had they argued before?

Mother of the Suspect: Yes, they were friends. I wasn’t told they had argued, I just know they were friends, they were together. But I was never told if they had fought or argued or not.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Do you have any idea what could have sparked such great anger between them that it led to murder?

Mother of the Suspect: I can’t imagine what happened.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: When you came home from work the day after the crime, didn’t you see any blood in the yard? Any traces of ash? Didn’t the dead chicken raise your suspicions?

Mother of the Suspect: I didn’t notice anything at all, everything was normal. I came home in the morning. I arrived home at 7:00 a.m., I went into the house, but I didn’t see anything changed. Everything was as I left it. When I entered the gate, I saw the chicken on the ground, as if the dog had dragged it. The dog often drags animals and makes blood in the yard. I didn’t think something like this could happen. I couldn’t imagine it.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: So you didn’t ask your son what the dead chicken was doing there?

Mother of the Suspect: No, because the dog often drags dead chickens around the yard.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Did you refuse to cooperate with the authorities?

Mother of the Suspect: I didn’t refuse. I only refused on the first day, when they wanted to give him medication before the evaluation. They wanted to sedate him without first performing the evaluations. They wanted to give him the medication before the evaluation. Then I refused the hospitalization.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Did you prevent your son from accessing online school?

Mother of the Suspect: It wasn’t that I prevented him, I just didn’t have the means to get him online.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Messages appeared on your son’s TikTok account in the public domain. Did he have internet access to post those messages?

Mother of the Suspect: He no longer had access to the phone, to the internet since Tuesday night. He no longer had access to anything. A TikTok and a live stream were posted, and where we were, a policewoman entered the boy’s room and saw that it wasn’t his TikTok. It was his account, but it was hacked. It’s still hacked and posts are being made from his account. And live streams were made last night. It was a picture of my son and someone else speaking in his name.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Are you afraid of the public’s outrage?

Mother of the Suspect: Yes, I’m afraid of the public’s outrage, because people are jumping on us, I have over 500 threats on my phone, they are threatening us, we are being terrorized by people. Wherever I go, I can’t find peace.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Did you try to take your son out of the country?

Mother of the Suspect: No.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Do you have anything to reproach yourself for?

Mother of the Suspect: My son stayed home more, I work three shifts, I had a lot of trust in him, my husband is away. We have to work, we can’t just stay home, we have to go to work to support the family. Without a job, you can’t live, without money you can’t live, you need money for food, clothes, for school, and everything else.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Do you know where your son is now?

Mother of the Suspect: I don’t know anything at all. They took him from the Child Protection Agency on Thursday evening, and I still don’t know where my son is.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Are you afraid of what might happen to you in the future?

Mother of the Suspect: I’m afraid because people are very outraged at us, they are threatening us, they are following us. They follow us wherever we go, I don’t… I don’t know what to say anymore.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Your son is not criminally responsible. How do you feel about that?

Mother of the Suspect: I’m sorry for everything that happened. It’s not my fault, I’m sincerely, sincerely sorry, this shouldn’t have happened. It’s not my fault that there are no laws. I sincerely apologize, I don’t know what else to say, I have no words.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Would things have been different if your son could have been held criminally responsible?

Mother of the Suspect: I’m a mother too, I understand… we’re all parents. Maybe things would have been different, my son would have gone where he should have gone, and maybe there wouldn’t be this revolt all over the country, with everyone on our heads.

Andreea Borboros, Journalist: Do you have a criminal record? Have you ever tried to kill anyone?

Mother of the Suspect: I’ve never had any trouble with the law. I’ve never been convicted, I don’t even have a fine, absolutely nothing, I’m very clean, I don’t have a criminal record.

A Terrible, Premeditated Crime

Mario, a 15-year-old boy, was killed by his classmates on January 21st in the commune of Cenei, Timiș County. Three children – one 13 years old and two 15 – beat him, stabbed him, and then tried to set him on fire to dispose of the body. They dug a hole and threw him in it. The next day, they put their backpacks on their backs and went to school as if nothing had happened.

According to investigators, the crime was planned in detail a month prior, motivated by revenge. The 13-year-old claims he was himself a victim of Mario’s bullying. His grandmother stated he told her, “’He terrorized me, he cursed me, he beat me.’ And I said, ‘Didn’t you tell your mother?’ He said, ‘Yes, I told her, but she didn’t take any action.’”

Because he is 13 years old, he is not criminally responsible. The parents have been stripped of their parental rights, and the boy is now hospitalized in a neuropsychiatric hospital for evaluation. Investigators were reportedly shocked by the “serenity” with which he confessed to the crime.
