A faulty part in a gas distribution cabin is believed to be the cause of a widespread gas outage affecting approximately 12,000 homes in Mons, Belgium. The disruption began Saturday and continues to impact residents as crews work to restore service.

According to reports, the issue originated with a malfunctioning component within an ORES cabin, triggering a cascade of problems across the gas network. The outage prompted a large-scale response from ORES, Sibelga, and RESA, who began door-to-door restoration efforts Saturday morning, starting in the Cuesmes district between the industrial zone and Sainctelette Boulevard.

As of Saturday evening, gas service had been restored to 250 homes, and crews were able to shut off valves at all previously inaccessible properties. Technicians are now systematically reopening valves at each residence. Residents who were absent during the initial valve-closing phase are advised to contact ORES to schedule an appointment for service reactivation, with a specific phone number provided in a notice left at their homes.

The restoration process is expected to take between 15 and 20 hours, continuing Sunday with a focus on critical infrastructure such as nursing homes, daycare centers, and businesses. This meticulous work underscores the importance of safety protocols in gas distribution networks.

Authorities indicated that the teams are working diligently to resolve the issue and minimize disruption for affected residents. The incident highlights the complexities of maintaining essential utility services in densely populated areas.
