Capcom delivered a notable content update to its action role-playing game, Monster Hunter Wilds, on December 16, introducing the highly anticipated Gogmazios monster and sparking renewed player interest. The free update, positioned as the last major addition before the game’s full release, reportedly boosted concurrent Steam players to approximately 120,000-a figure comparable to previous surges but possibly indicative of a shifting player engagement trend. The update includes collaborative hunts supporting up to eight players and introduces new support characters, alongside a limited-time event starting December 19.
Capcom’s free update for its monster-hunting action role-playing game, Monster Hunter Wilds, launched on December 16, bringing with it the highly anticipated “Gogmazios” monster and a surge in player activity. The update, the final major content addition before the game’s full release, saw Steam concurrent player counts climb to approximately 120,000, mirroring levels seen during the third free update in September.
Players reaching Hunter Rank 100 can now take on Gogmazios through the “Ancient Buried Ruins” and “Undying Embers” quests. These large-scale hunts support up to eight players – four hunters and four support hunters – fostering a collaborative gameplay experience. The culmination of the Gogmazios hunt involves a complex charging sequence for the “Burst Cannon,” requiring coordinated effort from the hunting party.

According to data from SteamDB, the introduction of Gogmazios has significantly boosted Monster Hunter Wilds’ player base. Peak concurrent players jumped from a typical 10,000 to 20,000 to 120,000, a level comparable to the September update. This suggests a potentially steeper decline in player engagement since previous installments in the series.
Despite this, the hunt for the new monster remains popular among players. Dual Blade users, in particular, are enjoying the unique gameplay opportunities presented by Gogmazios, with its back serving as a platform for aerial maneuvers. Players have discovered an amusing interaction where striking a weak point can inadvertently launch them into the air along with the monster’s wings.
The large wing movements during attacks cause players using Dual Blades to be unexpectedly carried aloft after hitting a weak spot, creating a humorous and often repeated scenario.

The update also introduces new support hunters: Griffin, a Great Sword specialist, and Nadia and Yagiri, who wield Light Bowguns. These support characters become available after completing the main quest, “Hunter’s Dignity.”
Capcom has also announced the “Intertwined Celebration” event, scheduled to run from December 19 to January 14. Nadia will be a unique support hunter available exclusively during this event.
Despite mixed reviews on Steam, Monster Hunter Wilds continues to attract a dedicated player base. Capcom encourages returning players to team up and experience the content added over the past six months before the release of the upcoming expansion.
