Porto Alegre has confirmed its first case of mpox in 2026, raising public health awareness as Carnival approaches. According to the city’s Epidemiological Surveillance, the infection was contracted outside of Rio Grande do Sul state by a resident of the capital city. This confirmation comes at a time when increased social gatherings and physical contact during Carnival could potentially contribute to further transmission.
The city recorded 11 confirmed cases of the disease in 2025. The recent case underscores the continued presence of mpox and the importance of preventative measures, particularly during large public events.
Health officials are urging residents to take preventative steps before participating in Carnival festivities. Individuals are advised to examine their skin for any unusual eruptions, blisters, or sores, especially in the genital area, mouth, hands, and feet. Anyone identifying such changes should seek medical attention, wearing a mask and keeping any lesions covered.
During Carnival events, avoiding close or prolonged physical contact with individuals exhibiting suspicious skin lesions is strongly recommended. Mpox is primarily spread through direct contact with skin lesions, respiratory secretions, and saliva.
Preventative Measures
To minimize risk, frequent hand hygiene with 70% alcohol-based hand sanitizer is advised, particularly after touching surfaces in public places or using public transportation. Sharing personal items such as cups, cutlery, bottles, cigarettes, clothing, and towels should also be avoided.
Masks can provide additional protection in densely crowded settings, especially when there is active circulation of the virus.
Symptoms and Guidance
Initial symptoms of mpox can include fever, headache, muscle aches, weakness, and swollen lymph nodes, followed by skin lesions. Anyone suspecting they may have contracted the virus should seek medical evaluation and may be advised to isolate at home.
Individuals experiencing symptoms should refrain from attending Carnival events or engaging in close contact with others. The incubation period for the virus ranges from three to 21 days, with a typical range of 10 to 16 days. Continued vigilance for symptoms after the holiday period is recommended.
