Researchers found that those who frequently listen to music had a 39% lower risk of developing dementia compared to those who rarely or never engage with music. The study, which followed participants over the age of 70, highlights a potentially accessible and enjoyable way to support brain health.
The benefits extend beyond simply listening; actively playing a musical instrument was also associated with a reduced risk – a 35% decrease, the research showed.
Measurable Cognitive Benefits
Beyond dementia prevention, consistent music engagement appears to bolster overall cognitive function, particularly episodic memory. Episodic memory, which is essential for recalling daily life events, is often impaired in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease.
“In the absence of a curative treatment for dementia, it is crucial to identify strategies to prevent or delay the onset of the disease,” said lead study author, Pr Joanne Ryan.
The findings suggest that incorporating music into one’s routine could be a valuable strategy for maintaining cognitive health as we age. This research adds to a growing body of evidence demonstrating the importance of continued mental stimulation for long-term brain wellness.
