That preparation included Nasma Mahjoub working with Mona Zaki twice a week for a full year, focusing on physical performance, pronunciation, and the nuanced vocal style of “The Star of the East.” The training encompassed everything from facial muscle control and breathwork to the unique inflections and ornamentation that defined Um Kulthum’s iconic sound, all to ensure authenticity in Zaki’s portrayal. Mahjoub performs 12 songs in the film, ranging from complete tracks to shorter excerpts and musical passages.
