While national unemployment trends in Switzerland show a slight increase, the canton of Neuchâtel bucked the trend in January 2026,maintaining a stable unemployment rate of 4.8%. This localized stability – despite a modest rise in the number of unemployed individuals – offers a nuanced perspective on the Swiss labor market, particularly as businesses navigate ongoing economic uncertainty [[3]]. The following report details the specific factors contributing to Neuchâtel’s performance, including shifts in job seekers, available positions, and demographic trends within the workforce.

Neuchâtel’s unemployment figures remained stable in January 2026, holding steady at 4.8% despite a slight increase of four individuals bringing the total number of unemployed to 4,371. This contrasts with rising unemployment rates seen nationally and in the French-speaking region of Switzerland, which increased by 0.1 and 0.2 percentage points respectively, reaching 3.2% and 4.6%. The stability in Neuchâtel comes as businesses closely monitor economic headwinds and potential impacts on hiring.

The number of job seekers also decreased during the month, falling by 87 to a total of 6,721. Simultaneously, employers in the Neuchâtel region posted 2,159 open positions with public employment agencies, and 418 individuals found employment through these services.

A breakdown of the unemployment data reveals diverging trends across age groups. Unemployment decreased among young people under the age of 25, falling by 12 individuals and bringing their unemployment rate to 5.6%, a 0.2 percentage point decrease. However, unemployment rose among those aged 25 to 49, with an increase of six, and among those over 50, with an increase of ten, pushing the senior unemployment rate to 4.4%, up 0.1 percentage point.

Sectoral shifts also contributed to the overall picture. The watchmaking industry saw a decrease of 21 jobs, while other manufacturing activities experienced a decline of 18 positions. Conversely, the hospitality and food service sector added 11 jobs during the month.

While the unemployment rate held firm in January, officials caution that the economic outlook for 2026 remains uncertain. The labor market will require careful monitoring in the coming months to assess the impact of broader economic conditions.
