The $549 device, currently available for pre-order, represents a novel approach in a market increasingly focused on device convergence.
Nex Computer is aiming to redefine mobile computing with its upcoming NexPhone, a smartphone capable of running Android, Linux, and even Windows 11. The device, announced today, represents a significant step beyond the company’s existing NexDock series, which allows compatible Android phones to power laptop-style shells for enhanced productivity. This new offering seeks to be a complete computing solution in a single device, blurring the lines between mobile and desktop experiences.
At the heart of the NexPhone is NexOS, a customized operating system that integrates Linux as an application within the Android interface. Users can seamlessly launch Linux when needed. Alternatively, the phone can run a customized, tile-based user interface version of Arm-based Windows 11, reminiscent of the Windows Phone experience and supporting Progressive Web Apps. This multi-OS approach offers users unprecedented flexibility.
Connecting the NexPhone to an external display via USB-C unlocks a full desktop experience, with users able to choose between Android desktop mode, Linux Debian, or Windows 11. The NexPhone itself is positioned as a mid-range device, powered by the Qualcomm QCM6490 chipset – the same system-on-a-chip (SoC) found in the Fairphone 5.
Internally, the NexPhone features 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, expandable via microSD card. The device boasts a 6.58-inch IPS LCD display with FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, protected by Gorilla Glass 3. It also carries an IP69 rating for dust and water resistance, and is equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery supporting both 18W wired and wireless charging.
The camera system includes a 64-megapixel primary sensor (IMX787), a 13-megapixel ultrawide lens (ISOCELL 3L6), and a 10.5-megapixel front-facing camera utilizing Samsung’s 3J1 sensor. The NexPhone is priced at $549 (approximately HK$4,284) and is currently available for pre-order with a $199 deposit. The company anticipates shipping to begin in the third quarter of 2026.
