The next-generation Xbox is edging closer to reality, with AMD CEO Lisa Su recently indicating the system-on-a-chip (SoC) growth is on track for a potential 2027 launch. The proclamation, made during a shareholder meeting, provides a crucial update on Microsoft’s console plans amid increasing competition in the gaming market. While a firm release date remains unconfirmed, the progress reported by AMD signals continued investment in the Xbox ecosystem and its future hardware capabilities.

AMD, the chipmaker powering the consoles of both Sony and Microsoft, has indicated that the next-generation Xbox could arrive in stores next year.

The information emerged during a recent shareholder meeting, where CEO Lisa Su revealed that work on the new Xbox’s System on a Chip (SoC) – the single chip integrating the CPU, GPU, and other essential console components – “is progressing well to support a 2027 launch.”

SoC on Track for 2027, But Console Launch Still to Be Determined?

“From a product perspective, Valve is on track to begin shipping its AMD-based Steam Machine early this year, and development of Microsoft’s next Xbox, featuring a semi-custom SoC from AMD, is progressing well to support a 2027 launch,” Su stated.

The phrasing is key here. Su said AMD is prepared to “support a 2027 launch,” which doesn’t guarantee the console will actually hit store shelves that year. Given ongoing challenges with memory availability and rising costs, a potential delay isn’t out of the question, as recently suggested by Windows Central journalist Jez Corden. The development of powerful gaming hardware is increasingly reliant on a complex global supply chain.

Microsoft confirmed its partnership with AMD for the next Xbox in June of last year, but has yet to provide any specific launch window. The company did state that the new machine will offer “next-generation performance, cutting-edge graphics, revolutionary gameplay, and unprecedented compatibility.”

Sony is also collaborating with AMD on the next PlayStation, but rumors suggest Microsoft may take a different approach: speculation points to a hybrid Xbox-PC, capable of natively running both Xbox and PC games, and integrating access to stores like Steam and the Epic Games Store.
