More than 50 students who were kidnapped in Nigeria have safely returned to their families after a Friday armed attack on St. Mary Catholic School in Niger state.

Balus Dauwa Yohanna, Bishop of the Kontagora diocese, which oversees the school, and head of the state section of the Christian Association of Nigeria, confirmed that approximately half a hundred students escaped between Friday and Saturday, according to Daily Post.

“We were able to confirm this when we were able to contact and visit some of the families,” said Daniel Atori, spokesperson for the association and Bishop Yohanna. Some students hid in the forest to escape their captors, while local farmers helped others return home, he added.

253 Children Remain Kidnapped in Nigeria

“Aside from the 50 students who have escaped and returned home, we have 141 students who were not taken. Currently, there are 236 students, three of our staff, and 14 secondary school students kidnapped, a total of 253 children, plus 12 members of staff,” Atori stated.

The bishop’s spokesperson urged the public to remain calm and continue praying while collaborating with security forces and authorities to ensure the return of all hostages.

“The return of these 50 children is a relief. I ask you to continue your prayers for the rescue and return of the remaining victims,” he concluded.
