Nike is set to release a new iteration of its Shox Ride 2 sneaker, featuring a striking all-black colorway. The release revisits a pivotal moment in the company’s history, stemming from a challenge posed in 1984 by Bruce Kilgore, the creator of the Air Force 1, to develop cushioning that surpassed the capabilities of Air technology.
The resulting innovation, the SHOX system, debuted in 2000, utilizing PEBAX-based cylindrical columns for superior impact absorption. The Shox Ride 2, launched in 2004, built upon this foundation, integrating four Shox columns in the heel with Nike’s Max Air technology in the forefoot. This hybrid design aimed to combine responsive bounce with the agility of Air cushioning, quickly becoming a standout in the early 2000s sneaker market.
The latest version maintains the shoe’s distinctive, mechanical silhouette, now rendered entirely in black. The upper incorporates breathable mesh panels layered with black leather, creating a textured contrast despite the monochromatic scheme. The sole unit also receives a full black treatment, resulting in a modern and bold “triple black” aesthetic. This design blends the technological advancements of the Y2K era with a cutting-edge visual style, positioning the sneaker as a statement piece for street fashion.
