Nothing is expanding its presence in the mid-range smartphone segment with the release of the Phone (4a) and Phone (4a) Pro. This launch comes four years after the company’s first Phone (1) and ahead of the Phone (4) slated for release next year. The company is maintaining its signature transparent plastic design, now available in a wider range of colors – black and white are joined by blue and pink – to appeal to a broader audience.
A Bright and Expansive Display
The Phone (4a) boasts a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1224 x 2720 pixels. Its adaptive refresh rate ranges from 30 to 120 Hz, balancing smooth performance with power efficiency, according to Nothing. The display reaches a peak brightness of up to 4500 cd/m² in HDR, putting it on par with recent Redmi Note and Galaxy A series devices. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 7i, and the chassis has an IP64 certification for dust and splash resistance.
Under the hood, the Phone (4a) is powered by a Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor, paired with 8 or 12 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Nothing states that this chip offers a moderate performance increase over the previous generation, sufficient for everyday apply and less demanding games. This move reflects a trend toward optimized performance in the mid-range market.
A 5080 mAh battery, combined with 50W wired charging, aims to provide a full day of battery life, or even more with moderate use. The phone also supports low-power wired reverse charging for accessories. On the software side, Nothing is highlighting Android 16 with Nothing OS 4.1, as well as a new Essential Voice feature designed to clean up audio recordings and provide real-time translation in a dozen languages.
Nothing Phone (4a) Pro: A Premium Offering
Alongside the standard model, Nothing is introducing the Phone (4a) Pro, which the company positions as its most ambitious product for 2026 in the absence of a standard Phone (4). The Pro version features an aluminum unibody chassis, measuring approximately 7.95 mm thick, and is described as more premium than the Phone (4a)’s plastic build. The Glyph interface has also evolved, moving from a simple bar to a circular Glyph Matrix composed of 137 LEDs, inspired by the Phone (3) but enlarged by around 57%.
The Phone (4a) Pro’s display is a step up, with a 6.83-inch diagonal and a resolution of up to 1260 x 2800 pixels. The refresh rate reaches 144 Hz, typically found in gaming or premium smartphones, and peak brightness is advertised around 5000 cd/m². Nothing also mentions a 2160 Hz PWM dimming rate intended to reduce eye strain, a feature increasingly common on high-end screens.
The phone’s internal components have also been upgraded, featuring a Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 processor and LPDDR5X RAM, available in 8 or 12 GB configurations, alongside 128 or 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Nothing claims this chip delivers significant gains over the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 in CPU, GPU, and AI tasks, making the Phone (4a) Pro more capable for demanding applications. A 5300 mm² vapor chamber enhances cooling, a feature often seen in gaming and premium smartphones.
The camera system aims to improve upon previous models. The Phone (4a) Pro combines a 50-megapixel Sony Lytia 700C main sensor with optical stabilization, a 50-megapixel Samsung JN5 periscope telephoto lens offering 3.5x optical zoom (and up to 70x digital zoom), and an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens. A 32-megapixel sensor handles selfies.
