Dutch childcare provider Korein has paused the use of Nutrilon baby formula across its centers in the Eindhoven region amid heightened concerns over potential contamination with cereulide,a neurotoxin that can cause illness in infants. The move comes as European authorities reassess safety limits for the substance and follows a series of voluntary recalls impacting multiple brands, including both Nutrilon and Nestlé products, originating from ingredient sourcing in China. Korein’s decision also extends to the removal of play sand from its facilities due to asbestos concerns, reflecting a broader focus on child safety within the organization’s 100+ locations.
Dutch childcare provider Korein has temporarily suspended the use of Nutrilon baby formula at its locations in the Eindhoven region following concerns about potential contamination with cereulide, a toxic substance. Children who ingest cereulide can experience symptoms including vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
Korein, which operates over 100 childcare centers in the Brainport region of Eindhoven and North Limburg, is requesting that parents provide alternative formula brands starting Monday. “If we have a Nutrilon product for your child at our location, we will return it to you,” the company stated in a letter to parents.
The decision underscores the increasing scrutiny of baby food safety standards globally. Korein emphasized that the safety and health of children are its top priorities and prompted the immediate action. On Friday, the organization also removed indoor play equipment containing play sand due to potential asbestos contamination, according to reports.
Korein stated it will review any new information and guidance provided by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). It remains unclear whether other childcare organizations in the province will follow suit and discontinue the use of Nutrilon products.
Recent Recalls
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) lowered the permissible limit for cereulide in infant formula on Monday, triggering a voluntary recall of fourteen Nutrilon products by Danone following consultation with the NVWA.
Danone has stressed that baby formula remaining on store shelves after the recall is safe for consumption.
Nutrilon formula has also been recalled in other European countries. Earlier in January, Nestlé recalled two products across several European nations due to the possible presence of cereulide in an ingredient sourced from China.
