A new title, Operation Highjump: The Fall of Berlin, is aiming to recapture the spirit of classic arcade games like Metal Slug and Commandos while introducing a modern twist to the “run and gun” genre. The game promises endless side-scrolling levels, full-screen boss battles, and, of course, plenty of explosions, enemies, and weapons.
Developed by Mansion Games, Operation Highjump is designed to appeal to players who grew up with arcade titles. The game features the latest cover art from illustrator Alfonso Azpiri and a soundtrack composed by Chris Huelsbeck, known for his work on Turrican, The Great Giana Sisters, R-Type, and Star Wars: Rebel Strike.
For fans looking for more than just the game itself, Mansion Games and Tesura Games have announced a collector’s edition, along with a physical release for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5.
The developers emphasize that Operation Highjump offers more than just fast-paced action. As they explained in an interview, the title blends elements of Metal Slug, the puzzle-solving of Lost Vikings, the tactical gameplay of Commandos, and the narrative depth of Indiana Jones. This combination of genres aims to deliver a unique experience for players.
The game’s design draws inspiration from a variety of sources, fusing the frenetic action and platforming of classic run-and-gun titles with the narrative and puzzle elements found in adventure games. The retro 2D aesthetic combines pixel art with illustration, and animations are created frame-by-frame. Operation Highjump: The Fall of Berlin will feature 40 enemies and 8 final bosses, and will be available in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, and Catalan.
