Then-Game Director Jeff Kaplan revealed the team had seriously considered the idea, but ultimately dismissed it as “too far” even for a game featuring a talking gorilla. This rejection unexpectedly fueled a dedicated, long-term campaign within the Overwatch community.
When Blizzard dropped hints about the hero Brigitte in 2018, fans scoured the released materials. Mechanical blueprints appeared to depict a cat paw and a small harness, leading to speculation about a character named Mitzi, the Lindholm family’s pet, for whom Brigitte had apparently built a jetpack. While a charming detail, Mitzi never became a playable character. Disappointment intensified when Hero 28 was revealed to be Hammond, a hamster in a mech, seemingly claiming the “animal slot” and solidifying Jetpack Cat’s status as a missed opportunity.
According to Blizzard producers, the game’s new multi-hero release strategy provided the development team with the freedom to take greater risks. With the ability to launch five heroes at a time, a flying cat no longer felt like a wasted character slot. Fika’s abilities include sustained flight without a fuel meter, a tow cable for maneuvering allies through the air, and an ultimate ability that allows her to pull enemies off cliffs. Her “Combat Purring” is an area-of-effect heal that also pushes back opponents.
After nearly a decade of community pleas and developer teases, Blizzard has demonstrated that even the most popular internet memes can become reality.
