Gophers’ Coach P.J. Fleck Continues to Defend Controversial Iowa Game Call to Hawkeyes Fans

Minnesota Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck continues to engage with Iowa Hawkeyes fans, defending the officiating decision in their 2023 rivalry game, a contest that ultimately secured Minnesota’s first win against Iowa in Iowa City since 1999.

Fleck recounted recent encounters with Iowa fans sporting “It wasn’t a fair catch” T-shirts, explaining he often interjects to clarify the situation. “Hey, I like your shirt,” Fleck says he tells them. “That was actually a correct call.” The shirts reference a pivotal moment in the October 2023 game when a fair catch interference penalty negated a 54-yard touchdown run by Iowa’s Cooper DeJean, leading to a 12-10 Minnesota victory. Big Ten officials and the NCAA later confirmed the call was correctly enforced, according to ESPN.

Despite the past victory, Fleck emphasized that Saturday’s game against the Hawkeyes is a new challenge. “It’s its own entity,” he stated. “This is going to take a completely different effort, different team, different identity than we had before.” He also noted the difficulty of playing at Kinnick Stadium, recalling a challenging game there while with Ohio State in 2006. Kinnick Stadium is widely considered one of the most challenging venues in college football, known for its intense atmosphere and passionate fanbase. The Gophers are currently preparing for the 2:30 p.m. kickoff, where Iowa is favored by eight points.

Fleck revealed the team is even incorporating crowd noise and potential taunts into their practice sessions to prepare for the hostile environment. “We have a lot of things piped in to the indoor…that they might hear over and over and over,” he said. He added that the Gophers learned from last year’s game against Iowa, where they lost momentum in the second half after leading at halftime, and understand the importance of a complete four-quarter performance.

Officials stated that preparation and adjustments will be key as the Gophers aim to repeat their success in Iowa City.
