Pakistan Announces Participation in 2026 T20 World Cup, Will Skip India Match
Pakistan has confirmed its participation in the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, but will not face rival India in the group stage. The decision comes after Bangladesh was removed from the tournament by the International Cricket Council due to their refusal to travel to India for matches. The Pakistani government announced its stance on Sunday, January 31st.
“The Islamic Republic of Pakistan government allows the Pakistan cricket team to participate in the ICC World T20 2026,” a government post on X stated, “However, the Pakistan cricket team will not play in the match against India scheduled for February 15, 2026.”
Pakistan will bypass its scheduled T20 World Cup match against India.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) sided with Bangladesh in an ICC vote, urging the global governing body to acknowledge Bangladesh’s concerns. Pakistan and Bangladesh were the only two nations to vote in favor of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), while the remaining 14 countries did not support Bangladesh’s request to relocate their matches from India.
India-Pakistan Dispute
The tension between the PCB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been building since India refused to travel to Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The situation escalated during the 2025 Asia Cup when India declined to shake hands with Pakistani players following a security incident in Pahalgam.
Further complications arose when Bangladesh threatened the ICC, stating they would not travel to India due to concerns for their players’ safety.
Reports from Pakistan indicate the PCB offered to host Bangladesh’s matches, and engaged in intense negotiations with both the BCCI and the ICC to resolve the situation by February 1st.
Boycott Threat Averted
Earlier reports suggested Pakistan might boycott the World Cup altogether, but it has since emerged that the team had been planning to participate all along. According to reports, Pakistan never intended to delay their travel to Sri Lanka, where their matches are scheduled to be played.
PTI reports that Pakistan has already finalized arrangements to depart for Colombo early on February 2nd. The potential financial losses associated with a withdrawal likely factored into their decision to officially commit to the tournament.
