A contentious exchange between a Chilean congresswoman and a prominent actor unfolded this week on national television, highlighting the deep political divisions within the country. During a segment of the popular program “Podemos Hablar,” Congresswoman Pamela Jiles and actor Rodrigo Muñoz engaged in a heated debate following a discussion of a potential presidential run by Jiles [[1]]. The exchange, which included accusations of dishonesty and threats of legal action, quickly gained traction on social media, underscoring the increasingly polarized nature of Chilean political discourse.
A heated exchange unfolded on a recent episode of the Chilean television program “Podemos Hablar” when congresswoman Pamela Jiles and actor Rodrigo Muñoz clashed during a segment of the show.
The tension arose during a game-like portion of the program, where host Diana Bolocco revived a familiar segment from her past as a celebrity commentator – a “hot seat” whiteboard used to discuss public figures. After analyzing several television personalities, Bolocco shifted the focus to politics.
She asked Jiles, a member of the People’s Party, if she would consider running for president in the future. Bolocco then polled the guests on whether they would vote for Jiles, prompting a quick “Yes, absolutely” from Botota Fox.
A Tense Exchange Between Pamela Jiles and Rodrigo Muñoz
However, Rodrigo Muñoz didn’t hesitate to offer a starkly different opinion. “Absolutely not,” the actor stated firmly, and proceeded to explain his reasoning. “I’ve rarely encountered someone who speaks so carelessly about others and treats them poorly. Spreading lies about people is also a bad thing,” he said.
“Saying that (Gabriel Boric) is the worst president is something I strongly disagree with, and I disagree with many other things,” Muñoz continued, revealing that he had voted for the current president. The exchange highlights the often-polarized political climate in Chilean media.
Jiles, known for her direct style, responded with a touch of irony. “He’s a rabid Boric supporter,” the congresswoman quipped.
Muñoz then defended President Boric, stating, “I think it’s difficult, he’s young, but he’s an empathetic president who I truly believe cares about people. Now, whether he’s been successful as he wanted, or as we all wanted, is another matter.”
Jiles quickly countered the actor’s comments with a warning. “Having a different opinion is one thing, but telling someone they’re lying, and telling a congresswoman she’s lying, is serious. I could file a lawsuit for defamation,” she asserted.
“I find being abusive to be serious. I think you can say you don’t like something, but to say it’s terrible, it’s horrible, that’s horrible. And I don’t agree with you. And I wouldn’t vote for you,” Muñoz retorted.
Concluding his argument, Muñoz emphasized their differing viewpoints. “I don’t like the approach. I think that’s precisely why this country is so divided, because people need to be more democratic,” he stated.
“I would expect someone working in politics to show a little more empathy in what they say, more care, more kindness, to avoid the side of violence, and instead, to go towards kindness, which is what we need,” the actor concluded.
