Panathinaikos, a Greek professional basketball club, faced off against its long-standing rival, Olympiacos, in a EuroLeague away game on Friday, March 6, 2026.

After two quarters of play, the Athens-based club trailed 29-40. In response, Panathinaikos decided to remove a banner of club legend Dejan Bodiroga from its arena, depicting him holding the EuroLeague trophy he won in 2000.

Bodiroga played for the Athens team from 1998 to 2002, leading the club to EuroLeague championships in both 2000, and 2002. This type of symbolic gesture from a sports organization can sometimes reflect broader tensions or disagreements, and is notable for its potential impact on team morale and public perception.

Currently serving as the EuroLeague president, Bodiroga’s banner removal was justified by Panathinaikos as a response to perceived biased officiating against their team.

Despite this action, Panathinaikos ultimately lost the game 80-86.

Despite having the largest budget in the league, Panathinaikos currently holds a record of 16 wins and 14 losses, placing them 10th in the standings. This performance highlights the complex factors that contribute to success in professional sports, where financial resources do not always guarantee positive outcomes.
