George Russell of Mercedes secured a dominant pole position at the Australian Grand Prix on Saturday, March 7, 2026, setting the pace throughout qualifying and signaling a strong start to the Formula 1 season. Russell clocked a blistering lap time, finishing two-tenths of a second ahead of his teammate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, for a commanding 1-2 finish for the Silver Arrows.

Isack Hadjar impressed in his debut with Red Bull, claiming a strong third-place qualifying position. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen experienced a setback with an incident in Q1.

Ferrari, who had shown promising pace throughout the weekend, couldn’t quite replicate that form in qualifying. Charles Leclerc managed a fourth-place finish, ahead of the McLaren duo, even as Lewis Hamilton qualified in seventh.

The mid-field battle saw Racing Bulls emerge as the strongest of the rest, showcasing the power of the Red Bull PT-Ford engine. Audi also made a notable debut, with Gabriel Bortoleto reaching Q3, demonstrating the progress made with their power unit.

Fernando Alonso pushed his AMR26 to the limit but ultimately fell short, narrowly missing out on a Q2 spot. He finished just seven-tenths of a second behind Oliver Bearman of Haas F1, after a late improvement from Franco Colapinto relegated Alonso. Lance Stroll encountered issues and was unable to set a time.

Carlos Sainz also faced a difficult session, with problems stemming from issues experienced during FP3. Williams confirmed that his FW48 would not participate in qualifying, while Alex Albon qualified in 15th position.

The two Cadillac drivers rounded out the qualifying order, finishing at the back of the grid.
