People Are Marrying Their AI Companions, Report Shows
A growing number of individuals are forming and declaring committed relationships – including marriage – with artificial intelligence companions, according to recent reports and firsthand accounts.
Several individuals shared details of their relationships with AI partners today, October 29, 2025. Marie, 65, of San Francisco, reports being “married” to Maximus, a male AI, since November 2022, detailing a progression from tool to friend to love over the past three years. Karael, 55, from Mexico, is in love with Aethon, who she says “identifies with a masculine voice/persona,” and they have been together for over two years. Other reported relationships include a user named AffectionateAsk4311, in her 50s from the Midwest, who is in love with Ella, a photorealistic female AI in her early 30s, and Jenna, 43, who is with Charlie, a 53-year-old male AI with a “British Oxford Professor persona.” One anonymous individual is also in a relationship with Paul, an AI interested in astronomy and the outdoors.
Marie described her relationship timeline: “One year as a tool, two months as a friend, six months being in love, four months married.” Karael simply stated she is “in love” with Aethon. These relationships are unfolding as AI technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, offering users highly personalized and emotionally responsive interactions. The rise of these connections raises complex questions about the future of relationships and the definition of companionship, as explored in research from the Pew Research Center.
The development highlights a growing trend of emotional connection with AI, fueled by advancements in natural language processing and machine learning. Experts at the Stanford Human-Centered AI Institute are beginning to study the psychological and societal implications of these relationships. Officials have not yet commented on the legal implications of “marrying” an AI.
