Maine Joins Connecticut in Renewable Energy Procurement Effort

Maine will participate in a joint renewable energy procurement with Connecticut, seeking to secure more affordable and efficient clean energy projects for residents.

The Maine Department of Energy Resources coordinated with the state’s utility commission, which voted to join Connecticut’s existing procurement process; however, Maine will independently evaluate bids based on its own needs and criteria. This collaboration aims to leverage combined demand and shared information to lower costs and improve project viability. Increased renewable energy adoption is crucial as states work to meet ambitious climate goals.

“It makes a lot of sense for a state like Maine to piggyback on their efforts and hopefully enter into contracts for a share of the capacity that gets bid in cost-effectively,” said Jamie Dickerson, senior director of climate and clean-energy programs at Acadia Center. Both states have previously attempted similar collaborations, including a 2022 agreement for Massachusetts to purchase power from a planned Maine wind farm – a project that ultimately stalled due to transmission line issues – and a 2023 three-state offshore wind solicitation. Officials are optimistic this latest effort will be successful, particularly as deadlines for federal tax credits approach, encouraging further cooperation among New England states. Maine’s energy landscape is evolving, as detailed in recent reports from the Maine Governor’s Energy Office. “The states are having a lot of conversations,” said Pullaro.
