Sergio Pérez is preparing for his Formula 1 debut with Cadillac, backed by a new sponsorship from Mercado Libre, as the team gears up for the Australian Grand Prix. The veteran driver, who previously raced with Red Bull, brings 14 years of F1 experience to the American manufacturer’s aspiring new venture-an effort bolstered by critically important investment from General Motors and owners of the Los Angeles Lakers and Dodgers,TGW. Pérez acknowledges the project is long-term, but is focused on contributing his expertise to develop Cadillac into a competitive force, while also suggesting this could be his final major chapter in the sport.
As the clock ticks down at Cadillac’s UK facilities ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, Sergio Pérez is intensifying his physical and mental preparations for his debut race with the American-based team. This new chapter for “Checo” comes with the backing of a new personal sponsor: Mercado Libre.
Pérez acknowledges the initial races will be challenging, but believes his extensive Formula 1 experience will be key to quickly finding the right rhythm. This is an ambitious project backed by significant investment, not only from General Motors but also from TGW, owners of sports franchises like the Los Angeles Lakers and Dodgers, all eager to see Cadillac competing at the front of the grid.
“I think I can bring a lot to Cadillac,” the Mexican driver stated during a recent media session attended by Motorsport.com in Jalisco, Mexico, while filming a commercial for his new sponsor.
Pérez emphasized the value of his experience in developing the car: “I’ve been putting my experience to work since the shakedown,” he said, adding that his history with both midfield and championship-winning teams is a differentiator Cadillac valued during his signing.
“All the experience I have with different types of cars, with different types of regulations. I’ve spent 14 years in Formula 1 and learned a lot, and joining a new team is the best way to share that. There’s also a lot of experience within the team itself,” he added.
While some analysts predict a difficult start for Cadillac, Pérez believes expectations should be tempered initially. However, he’s firm in his commitment to more than just participation. He’s back on the grid to compete.
“There have been many months of preparation, and obviously, starting with a new project, everything is different. The whole team is learning, and those who understand Formula 1 know this is a long-term project. Returning to Formula 1 with a brand like Cadillac is a dream come true at this stage of my career,” Pérez explained.
He concluded with a statement of intent: “Enjoying this return doesn’t mean I’m going to cruise around on Sundays… It’s crucial for me to feel like we’re making significant progress.”
A Family Within Cadillac
With a two-year contract secured, Sergio Pérez is determined to savor every race. The disappointment of his previous team’s decision to terminate his contract, despite a prior renewal, provided valuable personal lessons he’s carrying forward as he embarks on a demanding schedule.
A key focus for Pérez is increased family presence at the races. He wants to have his loved ones close during this period, which he has suggested could be his final major adventure in Formula 1.
“Now I’m going to live in the present much more, enjoying it,” said Pérez, returning refreshed after a year away from the sport spent with his family.
