Liverpool have reportedly beaten out Chelsea for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, with a potential transfer fee reaching $118 million, according to reports Monday night.
However, the 20-year-old won’t join Anfield until the end of the current season, despite Liverpool’s urgent need for defensive reinforcements.
Jacquet was previously linked with a move to Chelsea earlier this month, but reportedly hesitated due to the competition for playing time within the Blues’ deep squad.
Liverpool, in contrast, is facing a significant shortage of center-back options. Captain Virgil van Dijk, 34, and Ibrahima Konate, whose contract expires at season’s end, are currently the only available choices for Arne Slot, with Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni sidelined due to injury.
The French under-21 international Jacquet has made 31 appearances for Rennes since breaking into the Ligue 1 side’s first team last season.
Liverpool is expected to pay an initial £55 million, with an additional £5 million contingent on performance-based add-ons.
Manchester City has been the most active club during this transfer period, securing Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth ($126 million) and Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace ($39m).
Otherwise, January has been relatively quiet, with most major clubs seemingly focusing their significant moves on the summer transfer window.
League-leading Arsenal has yet to make a single acquisition.
At the bottom of the table, West Ham has been the most proactive, attempting to bolster their squad to avoid relegation.
The Hammers spent $43 million on Brazilian striker Pablo Felipe and an additional $49.5 million on another forward, Taty Castellanos, from Serie A side Lazio.

What deals are still in the works?
Last-place Wolves have reportedly agreed to a $94 million offer from Crystal Palace for Norwegian striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.
This deal is expected to trigger a chain reaction, potentially allowing Jean-Philippe Mateta to finalize a move on Deadline Day. Palace has also secured Brennan Johnson from Tottenham to bolster their attacking options.
Mateta has been linked with Italian giants AC Milan and Juventus, as well as Premier League clubs Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.
Palace reportedly wants around $79 million for the French forward, and Sky Sports reported Monday morning that the FA Cup champions granted Mateta permission to undergo a medical with AC Milan.
Liverpool’s Andy Robertson could also be on the move.
The left-back was recently a target for Tottenham, but that potential transfer fell through.
Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee may also be seeking a fresh start, having seen limited playing time under interim boss Michael Carrick.
The Dutch forward has attracted interest from Napoli and Roma.
Fulham is reportedly keen to sign USA international Ricardo Pepi from PSV Eindhoven.
The Cottagers made a $55 million offer for the forward, but the Dutch club is reportedly holding out for at least $59 million.
Arsenal is reportedly exploring the loan market to cover for midfielder Mikel Merino, who is suspected to have broken a bone in his foot.
Tottenham boss Thomas Frank stated that Spurs are still pursuing Deadline Day signings, but did not specify the type of player they are targeting.

Which deals have been completed so far?
Tottenham has been one of the busiest clubs, bringing in midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid for $67 million and defender Souza from Santos for $24 million.
As mentioned, Manchester City secured their primary targets, Semenyo and Guehi, with relative ease earlier in the window.
They also sold winger Oscar Bobb to Fulham for $53 million.
In addition to Pablo and Castellanos, West Ham has also added speedster Adama Traore on an undisclosed fee from Fulham.
Traore, who previously had a loan spell at Barcelona, reunites with under-pressure manager Nuno Espirito Santo after their time together at Wolves.
The Hammers also sold Lucas Paqueta to Brazilian club Flamengo for $72 million and sent James Ward-Prowse to Burnley on loan.
Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea’s actions have been largely limited to recalling loan players.
Third-placed Aston Villa has been more active.
Villa has acquired former Chelsea forward and England international Tammy Abraham from Besiktas for $36 million.
They have also brought teenage Brazilian winger Alysson ($20 million) to Europe for the first time in his career and secured a loan deal with Juventus for fellow Brazilian Douglas Luiz, who previously played for Nottingham Forest.
Another former Forest loanee, Oleksandr Zinchenko, has been sold by Arsenal to Ajax.

Are any Australians involved in moves?
In exciting news for Australian soccer, Mohamed Toure has secured a move to England with Championship side Norwich City.
The 21-year-old signed a four-and-a-half-year deal from Danish side Randers for an undisclosed fee, which the BBC reported to be around $5 million.
“I’ve known the club for a very long time and I’m excited to get started. I’m here to learn and develop, and I’ve heard that Philippe Clement has had a big influence on the players and has brought out the best in them,” the Adelaide United product said.
“It’s an environment I want to be in and I want to improve under him. I love to work hard – every time I’m on the pitch, I try my best for the badge.”
It appears unlikely that any other Australians will secure a move to the Premier League.
