Pokémon Celebrates 30 Years, and an Unexpected English Lesson for Brazilian Gamers

Pokémon is marking its 30th anniversary with a look back at its cultural impact, and for many Brazilian gamers, that impact extends beyond entertainment – it’s been a significant, and often unintentional, English language education.

The franchise, which first launched in Japan in 1996, quickly became a global phenomenon. As Pokémon games, trading cards, and the animated series spread worldwide, a generation of players found themselves immersed in a world filled with creatures boasting Japanese-origin names. This presented a unique challenge – and opportunity – for non-Japanese speakers.

For Brazilian fans, who often encountered the games before widespread localization, learning the names of Pokémon, moves, and items became a de facto English lesson. The need to understand game mechanics and communicate with other players online drove many to pick up English vocabulary and pronunciation. This phenomenon highlights how interactive entertainment can inadvertently contribute to language acquisition.

The 30th-anniversary celebrations, which kicked off with a spot during Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026, include new features like Pokémon GO’s “What’s Your Favorite” photography feature, allowing players to share their favorite Pokémon with the hashtag #Pokemon30. Pokémon is planning “Day Out” and “Night Out” events throughout the year designed to connect fans of all ages.

The Pokémon Company also announced updates on upcoming games, including Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, as well as the rerelease of Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version, and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

The enduring popularity of Pokémon, now entering its fourth decade, demonstrates the franchise’s ability to adapt and engage new generations of players. The continued investment in new titles and community events signals a strong future for the brand.
