A six-year-old boy is dead and several others injured following a harrowing traffic collision in a busy urban area Monday afternoon.Authorities report a vehicle left the roadway and struck multiple pedestrians near a crosswalk, prompting a swift criminal examination and the detention of both drivers involved. The incident underscores the dangers faced by pedestrians in city centers and has left a community in grief, with vigils already forming at the crash site.
A six-year-old boy died and multiple people were injured Monday after a car veered onto a sidewalk and struck pedestrians near a crosswalk, authorities reported. The incident, which occurred in an urban area, highlights the vulnerability of pedestrians in city centers and has prompted a criminal investigation.
The collision was so forceful that the Toyota vehicle overturned, hitting a traffic light and five people waiting to cross the street. Among the victims were Małgorzata and her son, Tomek, age six.
Paramedics rushed to the scene and attempted to revive Tomek, transporting him to a hospital. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. Other injured individuals were also taken to hospitals for treatment. Karolina, one of those injured, remains hospitalized and is scheduled to undergo surgery, according to reports.
“I don’t remember much about the incident,” Karolina told reporters from her hospital bed.
Both drivers involved were detained and questioned by prosecutors, who have since announced they will pursue criminal charges against them. Each driver faces a potential prison sentence of up to eight years.
Earlier Monday, Tomek had been at daycare, enjoying time with his friends. He had finished lunch shortly before his mother arrived to pick him up around 1:00 PM. His teachers were unaware that they were seeing him for the last time.
The pair lived nearby and were walking towards a tram stop when the Toyota suddenly jumped the curb at the intersection. The car flipped over, knocking down a traffic signal and striking pedestrians on the sidewalk. Tomek was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but doctors were unable to save him.
The community is in mourning, with people gathering at the site of the tragedy to lay flowers and stuffed animals. “Even the homeless are leaving toys and lighting candles. What happened is unimaginable,” said a local resident, Irena.
Journalists visited the daycare center, where staff described Tomek as a “very good child.” The director, visibly emotional, declined to comment further out of respect for the family. “We are all very upset about this. We need peace, as does the boy’s family,” she said.
