Portugal‘s strong performance in European club competitions this week has significantly improved its standing in UEFA’s coefficient rankings, bolstering hopes for an additional Champions League berth in teh 2026/27 season. The nation jumped to fourth in the annual rankings thanks to wins by Benfica, Sporting, and FC Porto, and a draw by Sporting Braga. These results have implications for the number of teams Portugal can send to Europe’s premier club tournaments in the coming years, as UEFA uses these rankings to determine national portrayal.

Portugal is making a strong push for a coveted Champions League spot, climbing to fourth in UEFA’s annual European club competition rankings after a near-perfect week of results. Three wins and a draw have significantly boosted their coefficient score, though they still trail the top two positions which guarantee an extra berth in the 2026/27 Champions League.

The Portuguese clubs also fared well in the five-year rankings, currently holding seventh place – surpassing both the Netherlands and Belgium. Benfica’s 2-0 victory at home against Ajax and Sporting’s 3-0 win over Club Brugge were key to this positive movement, as these competitions contribute to a nation’s overall UEFA coefficient.

Portugal accumulated 1.400 points during the week. Benfica, Sporting, and FC Porto each earned 0.400 points with their respective victories, while Sporting Braga secured 0.200 points for the nation with a 1-1 draw against Rangers. Each win is worth two points, and each draw is worth one, which are then divided among the five Portuguese clubs competing in UEFA competitions in 2025/26.

The Netherlands earned 0.667 points thanks to wins from PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar, while Ajax, Feyenoord, Utrecht, and Go Ahead Eagles all suffered losses. Belgium totaled 0.800 points, fueled by victories from Union St. Gilloise and Genk – though Club Brugge fell to Sporting in Lisbon, and Anderlecht and Charleroi are no longer in European play.

With 9.400 points for the 2025/26 season, Portugal now has a total of 62.066 points over the past five years. This leaves them 2.634 points behind the Netherlands (64.700), but 4.316 points ahead of Belgium in the UEFA five-year ranking. The coefficient rankings are crucial, as they determine the number of Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League spots allocated to each nation.

Looking at the annual rankings – which determine the extra Champions League spot – Portugal jumped two places from sixth to fourth. Italy and Poland also made significant gains, but England and Germany continue to lead the way. Greece also broke into the top 10.
