Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a virtual meeting Saturday, November 22, 2025, to discuss the formal launch of a strategic partnership between their two nations. The developing collaboration aims to strengthen ties across multiple sectors, signaling a renewed focus on international cooperation for both Indonesia and the United Kingdom.
The meeting took place with President Subianto participating via video conference from his residence in Hambalang, West Java.
A key focus of the partnership will be maritime cooperation, with both leaders agreeing to bolster the Maritime Partnership Program. This includes enhanced maritime security collaboration, information sharing, and increased capacity for law enforcement at sea.

According to a statement released following the meeting, the two leaders also discussed accelerating the Economic Growth Partnership. President Subianto affirmed Indonesia’s readiness to expand collaboration in ways that promote job creation and sustainable economic growth.
Cooperation in the field of education was also addressed, with Prime Minister Starmer announcing plans to increase the presence of British universities within Indonesia. He also committed to providing up to 10,000 scholarships for Indonesian students.
“In the education sector, Prime Minister Starmer paid attention to the planned expansion of leading British universities in Indonesia and conveyed the British government’s commitment to providing up to 10,000 scholarships for Indonesian students,” the statement read.
Beyond bilateral issues, Subianto and Starmer also exchanged views on the evolving situation in Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need for an international stabilization force to protect civilians and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.
The virtual meeting is seen as an important first step toward a joint agenda in the coming year, and reinforces both countries’ commitment to building an inclusive, forward-looking, and mutually beneficial partnership.
