Prince Andrew Stripped of Royal Titles, to Leave Royal Lodge Following Memoir Release
Prince Andrew will be stripped of his royal titles, including prince, and will move out of his home, Royal Lodge, to a private residence, Buckingham Palace announced today, a move that marks a significant fall from grace for the royal.
The decision follows the recent publication of Virginia Giuffre’s posthumous memoir, Nobody’s Girl, which details her experiences as a victim of sex trafficking involving Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Giuffre died by suicide in April of this year at the age of 41. According to her family, the publication of the memoir represents a victory, with Giuffre “bring[ing] down a British prince with her truth and extraordinary courage.”
King Charles has initiated a formal process to remove Andrew’s “style, titles and honours,” with the royal now to be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. British historian Andrew Lownie, author of Entitled, previously stated that the only way to resolve the ongoing controversy was for Andrew to “leave Royal Lodge, goes into exile abroad with his ex-wife, and is basically stripped of all his honours.” Sarah Ferguson will also be moving out of Royal Lodge. The allegations detailed in the memoir have reignited calls for greater accountability for those associated with Epstein. Nobody’s Girl recounts harrowing details of abuse, including allegations against Prince Andrew, and highlights a pattern of exploitation and a failure to protect vulnerable individuals. Giuffre’s memoir also reveals allegations of abuse by her father and details a network of individuals who enabled Epstein’s crimes. The book’s publication has also brought renewed scrutiny to Ghislaine Maxwell, who remains incarcerated, and sparked debate about potential pardons, as discussed by Ian Maxwell in the Spectator. Buckingham Palace has stated it will cooperate fully with any further investigations stemming from the allegations.
