Putin Hosts UAE President as Ukraine Talks Continue
As direct talks between Ukrainian and Russian representatives continue in Abu Dhabi, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Moscow on Thursday, January 29, 2026. The meeting comes amid ongoing international efforts to find a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, and highlights the UAE’s role as a key mediator.
The first known direct negotiations between Ukrainians, Russians, and Americans regarding Washington’s peace plan took place Friday and Saturday in the Emirati capital. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that another session is expected Sunday, with potential U.S. participation.
Putin was accompanied by a large delegation including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Kremlin Special Envoy for Economic Affairs Kirill Dmitriev, and Central Bank of Russia Governor Elvira Nabiullina. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, a staunch Kremlin ally, also attended the meeting, a rare appearance at bilateral talks.
President bin Zayed Al Nahyan, known as “MBZ,” reaffirmed the UAE’s support for
“constructive dialogue and efforts dedicated to promoting the necessary diplomatic
solutions,” specifically mentioning his country’s mediation in prisoner exchanges
between Russia and Ukraine.
So far, prisoner exchanges and the repatriation of remains are the only concrete
results of negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv since Russia launched its full-scale
invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated
Thursday, prior to the meeting, that the UAE is Russia’s “main trade partner in
the Arab world.”
The UAE and Russia maintain close cooperation in the energy sector, particularly
within OPEC+, the organization of major oil-exporting countries.
