Russian President Vladimir Putin stated Tuesday that his country is prepared for a potential war with Europe, signaling an escalation in rhetoric amid ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The comments, made at a Moscow investment forum, come as concerns mount over the possibility of a wider European conflict.
We are not planning a war with Europe, I have said this a hundred times. If Europe wants to fight with us, and starts, then we are ready for this now. There is no doubt about this. If Europe suddenly decides to start a war, and does so, a situation may very quickly arise in which there will be no one to negotiate with.
Putin accused European nations of lacking peaceful intentions and aligning themselves with the side of war in Ukraine, presenting demands that he deemed unacceptable to Russia. He further claimed that European countries are actively hindering efforts by the United States and former President Donald Trump to reach a peace agreement.
Europeans are also obstructing the efforts of the US administration and Donald Trump to reach an agreement on peace negotiations.
The Russian president also asserted that the city of Pokrovsk is now fully under Russian military control, following the release of footage by the Russian Defense Ministry showing Russian soldiers raising flags in the frontline city. Putin characterized attacks on Russian tankers as “piracy” and indicated that Russia will expand its strikes to include Ukrainian ports and ships in response.
On Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry reacted strongly to a statement by a NATO official regarding a potential preemptive strike. “Moscow considers the statement by Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, about possible preemptive strikes against Russia as an extremely irresponsible step, demonstrating the alliance’s readiness for escalation,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.
Zakharova referenced Dragone’s recent interview with the Financial Times, in which the NATO official discussed a “preemptive strike” that appeared to be a “defensive action,” adding, “This is far removed from our usual way of thinking and behaving.”
We consider Giuseppe Cavo Dragone’s statement about possible preemptive strikes against Russia to be an extremely irresponsible step, which demonstrates the alliance’s readiness for further escalation. We regard this as a deliberate attempt to undermine efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis. Those making such statements must be aware of the risks involved and the potential consequences, even for the allied members themselves.
Zakharova argued that NATO has long concealed its true intentions. “At the same time, the bloc’s leadership has the audacity to accuse Russia of pursuing ‘militant nuclear rhetoric,’ intimidation, and hybrid warfare, without any evidence of our involvement,” she stated.
Zakharova emphasized that “the anti-Russian hysteria fomented by the alliance and the fears of a ‘Russian attack’ on the bloc’s member states are the backdrop against which such statements not only add fuel to the fire but also seriously ignite the existing confrontation.” “Brussels loves to repeat the mantra about the alliance’s ‘purely defensive’ nature. Giuseppe Cavo Dragone’s self-incriminating statements about ‘preemptive strikes’ put an end to this mythology,” she concluded, according to TASS. The exchange highlights the increasingly fraught relationship between Russia and NATO, and the potential for miscalculation as the war in Ukraine continues.
