Diplomatic efforts to find a resolution to the war in Ukraine continue Monday in Berlin, with Russia’s demands regarding the Donbas region high on the agenda as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, former President Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, and a number of European leaders meet.

Ukraine appears increasingly willing to forgo its aspirations for NATO membership in exchange for security guarantees from the United States and European partners.

However, Putin securing control of the Donbas region would represent a significant breach of Ukrainian defenses and provide Russia with a direct route toward Kyiv.
