A typical winter day in Quebec is unfolding with enough snow to cause some travel issues during the morning and evening commutes.

In Brief:

  • Multiple accidents and vehicles leaving the roadway were reported Wednesday morning;

  • Snow, at times heavy, fell Wednesday across southern Quebec;

  • Sudden bursts of snow could significantly reduce visibility during the evening commute;

  • Temperatures are expected to rise Wednesday afternoon, but will remain below freezing.

Travel Disruptions Expected as Snow Impacts Quebec

Quebec is experiencing typical winter conditions, with snowfall causing hazardous road conditions and impacting travel Wednesday. The snowfall, arriving in waves, is creating challenges for both the morning and evening commutes.

Several accidents and vehicles leaving the roadway were reported Wednesday morning, indicating the slick conditions are already affecting drivers. The snow began falling late Tuesday night in the Outaouais and Laurentian regions, gradually spreading eastward toward Montreal.

Cold Temperatures Contributing to Hazardous Conditions

Two factors are contributing to the dangerous road conditions: cold temperatures and the nature of the snowfall. Cold pavement offers less traction, and even a small amount of snow can create icy patches. The light, powdery snow is also easily blown around by the wind.

Winds gusting over 25 mph are reducing visibility and potentially blowing snow back onto roadways that had been cleared. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and allow extra travel time.

Second Wave of Snow Expected

Another round of snow is forecast to move through the St. Lawrence Valley later Wednesday, impacting areas from Montreal and its north shore to Quebec City. This second wave is expected to be more localized, but could bring periods of heavier snowfall. Sudden bursts of snow, known as snow squalls, are possible, reducing visibility quickly.

NEIGE2 (15)

Accumulations are expected to be between 5 and 10 centimeters for the Outaouais, Greater Montreal, and Quebec City areas. The Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Laurentians, Mauricie, Beauce, Estrie, and Montérégie regions could see around 5 centimeters, even as most other areas of Quebec are forecast to receive less than 5 centimeters.
