The Minnesota Wild dramatically bolstered their blue line Friday with the acquisition of Norris Trophy winner Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks, a move that instantly elevates their Stanley Cup aspirations.
Hughes, 26, arrives in Minnesota with a proven track record of offensive prowess from the defense position. He’s slated to make his Wild debut Sunday against the Boston Bruins at 6 p.m. ET (FDSNWI, FDSNNO, NESN, SNP, SNO, SNE). The addition of a player of Hughes’ caliber gives Minnesota a potential top-five skater pairing alongside star forward Kirill Kaprizov.
The seventh overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, Hughes claimed the Norris Trophy in 2024 after a career year, racking up 92 points – 17 goals and 75 assists. In just seven full NHL seasons, he’s already become the Canucks’ all-time leading scorer among defensemen with 432 points in 459 games and 371 assists.
Prior to the trade, Hughes ranked second among all defensemen in total points since the 2019-20 season with 429 points in 454 games, trailing only Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche (465 points in 426 games), according to NHL EDGE stats. Dating back to his NHL debut on March 28, 2019, Hughes led all defensemen in both assists (190) and power-play points.
This season, before being traded, Hughes was tied with Miro Heiskanen of the Dallas Stars for the lead among defensemen in power-play points with 12, and ranked 11th at the position in overall points with 23 in 26 games. He has recorded at least 30 power-play points in three separate seasons, including a career-best 38 in 2023-24. Hughes can become an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 season. The Wild will be looking to secure his future in Minnesota as they push for a deep playoff run.
