Egyptian actress Rahma Ahmed has revealed the reasons behind her decision to step away from acting, sharing a detailed post on her official Facebook page.
“For journalists who are interested in reaching out, and thank you so much for your interest, it’s important to remember that very few people actually know me, and even fewer are invested in my news beyond those who have been with me from the beginning and truly understand who I am – most of whom are on this page,” Ahmed wrote. “I’m not trying to create a trending topic, so my response will be here, for those who genuinely care to hear it. I haven’t converted to Islam, as some pages are reporting, though that would certainly be a joyous occasion. Just because I’m not wearing a hijab doesn’t mean I don’t know God (God knows intentions, and people only see the surface). I’ve simply had enough of acting. And that doesn’t mean I’ve repented – repentance comes when I’ve used my profession for something wrong or harmful. The roles I’ve taken and chosen are proof of that. On the contrary, I deeply respect the art of acting, and perhaps that’s why I’m moving away from it. To work, to be present, and to land good roles, I’m often forced to pay a heavy price, whether through favoritism, disrespect, harassment, or compromises demanded by some directors, producers, and even stars.”
She explained that to secure a role, she often felt pressured to concede to certain demands. “Of course, not everyone is like that; it’s a profession like any other, with good and bad people. I greatly respect art and I respect true artists.”
Ahmed added that while she’s participated in modest roles, she’s proud of them, both on stage and in television. “And to those who say I can’t find work, the respectable, or let me say, ‘artistic’ opportunities that came my way in acting were small. I accepted them because they were all honorable projects with talented and respectful directors, who, above all, have humanity and professionalism. Currently, and for a long time now, I’ve been struggling with whether to continue, stay strong, and wait for an opportunity that relies on my talent in a truly respectable work that respects my talent and my humanity, or to pay the price with my mental health and the financial pressure of having less work, and endure hurtful words from people, and tolerate the insult of choosing to work in small roles and putting in a lot of effort, while some people stop me in the street to talk about them and are happy with them and waiting to hear what I will work on next, despite their small size.”
Ahmed’s most recent role was in the 2024 series “Raqam Siri” (Secret Number), starring Yasmin Raeis, Sedky Sakhr, and others, directed by Mahmoud Abdel Tawab and written by Mohamed Soliman Abdel Malek.
