Rangers’ Fourth Line Shows Promise Despite 2-0 Loss to Oilers

The New York Rangers’ fourth line demonstrated strong play and generated several scoring opportunities during Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to the Edmonton Oilers at Madison Square Garden, despite the team’s overall offensive struggles.

Sam Carrick hit the post, Matt Rempe had a scoring chance, and Adam Edstrom consistently threatened Edmonton’s net, earning praise from head coach Mike Sullivan. “I think that line played extremely well for us,” Sullivan said. “They had great energy. Their physicality and presence on the ice creates anxiety out there.” The line’s size – featuring the 6-foot-9 Rempe and 6-foot-7 Edstrom – is intended to wear down opponents and create opportunities for the Rangers’ top lines. Rempe stated, “If we play our game, I think we’re really hard to handle…We’re fast and big.”

The Rangers also continue to work on integrating offseason acquisition Vladislav Gavrikov into the defensive lineup, specifically alongside Adam Fox. Sullivan noted the pairing is “a work in progress” but is “improving,” adding, “The addition of him on the blue line has been very advantageous for us.” Gavrikov, signed to a seven-year, $49 million deal, was brought in for his reliability and is expected to provide stability to Fox, who previously had inconsistent defensive partners. With Carson Soucy currently on injured reserve, Braden Schneider is expected to continue playing on both the right and left sides of the defense. The Rangers’ performance on special teams and overall consistency will be key as they navigate the early part of the season. This game highlights the team’s ongoing efforts to build a competitive roster capable of contending for the Stanley Cup.

Sullivan indicated the team will continue to evaluate the fourth line’s performance and Gavrikov’s integration as they move forward.
