Real Sociedad has advanced to the Copa del Rey final, securing their spot after a hard-fought victory against Athletic Club.

Cortesía | Now, Real will play in the final for the first time since the 2019-20 season.

Real Sociedad, featuring Jon Aramburu and Yangel Herrera in the starting lineup, defeated Athletic Club 1-0 in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal, earning a place in the tournament final.

Mikel Oyarzabal’s late goal sealed the victory, extending Real Sociedad’s aggregate score to 2-0 after a 1-0 win in the first leg back in February. The Copa del Rey final is scheduled for April 18th.

The Basque derby mirrored the first leg with both teams creating opportunities, though Real Sociedad generally saw more attacking chances. Neither side could break the deadlock for much of the match.

In the 83rd minute, a challenge in the Athletic Club penalty area initially went unnoticed by the referee. However, a subsequent VAR review led to a penalty being awarded, which Oyarzabal calmly converted to give Real Sociedad the decisive 1-0 lead.

This marks Real Sociedad’s first appearance in the Copa del Rey final since their triumph in the 2019-20 season, also against Athletic Club. Their opponent will be Atlético de Madrid, a familiar foe – the two teams previously met in the 1986-87 final, with Real Sociedad winning 4-2 on penalties. This upcoming match presents a chance for Real Sociedad to repeat that success.

Aramburu and Herrera join Juan Arango and Jeffrén Suárez as Venezuelan players who have been part of a Copa del Rey finalist squad, though Suárez is the only one to have actually played in the final, doing so with Barcelona in 2009.
