A Japanese sushi restaurant chain has paid a record 510 million yen (over $67 million USD) for a single bluefin tuna at a traditional New Year auction held at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. The 243-kilogram (536-pound) fish will be served at branches of the Sushizanmai chain, Reuters reported Monday.

Kiyomura, the company that operates the restaurant chain, surpassed its own previous record from 2019, when a premium tuna sold for 333.6 million yen.

“I hope that the economy will improve this year. The government of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has promised to work, work, work, and Sushizanmai will do the same,” said Kiyoishi Kimura, the chain’s owner.

“I thought the winning bid would be a little lower, maybe around 400 or 300 million yen, but in the end it went over 500 million,” added Kimura, who is known as the “tuna king.”

The massive tuna was transported to Sushizanmai’s main branch, where it was filleted and distributed to restaurants across the country. Dishes featuring the fish will be sold to customers at regular prices, Kimura said.
