Amidst ongoing scrutiny following his recent departure as Red Bull Racing CEO and Team Principal, Christian Horner addressed emerging claims of potential regulatory breaches by rival teams. Reports allege that both Red Bull and Mercedes might potentially be exploiting a loophole regarding engine compression ratios ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season, which will cap ratios at 16:1. The controversy centers on accusations that both teams are achieving 18:1 ratios during on-track performance, a practice that could offer a important performance advantage if confirmed.

Christian Horner stepped down as CEO and Team Principal of Red Bull Racing in July 2025, but despite his departure, he addressed questions surrounding the sport during a recent interview with TODAY.

Reports have surfaced suggesting that Red Bull, based in Milton Keynes, and Mercedes may have exploited a loophole in the regulations to increase engine compression ratios ahead of the implementation of the new technical rules.

Under the 2026 regulations, engine compression ratios are capped at 16:1. Higher compression ratios generally lead to increased efficiency.

It’s alleged that Mercedes and Red Bull are capable of achieving a compression ratio of 18:1 while the car is in motion, taking advantage of the fact that measurements are only taken when the car is stationary and at ambient temperature.

However, these claims remain unconfirmed.

Horner cautiously addressed the topic, stating, “Formula 1 is about pushing boundaries and how regulations are interpreted. That has always been the case, and it always will be.”

He continued, “The teams that are most conservative are never at the front of the grid. You have to push the limits.”

“Of course, it all comes down to how the regulations are interpreted. Some of the brightest engineers in the world will look at these rules and think, ‘How can we maximize performance?’”

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff responded sharply to concerns from other engine manufacturers during the official launch of the W17, saying:

“I don’t understand why some teams are focusing so much on others and continuing to stir up controversy over something so clear and transparent!”

He added, “Our communication with the FIA has been very positive from the start. This applies not only to compression ratios, but to other things as well.”

“Especially in this area, the regulations are very clear. The standard measurement procedures are also very clear, even for engines outside of Formula 1.”

“So everyone should focus on their own business!”
