A red alert has been issued for the Attica region of Greece, including Athens, as a severe weather system approaches. Authorities have preemptively closed all primary and secondary schools on Tuesday, prioritizing student and staff safety amidst forecasts of heavy rainfall and strong winds. This decision follows similar closures earlier in the year due to severe winter weather, highlighting a growing pattern of extreme weather impacting the country and prompting increased preparedness measures. Residents are urged to stay informed and exercise caution as civil protection services prepare for potential emergencies.

Authorities in Greece have announced the closure of all primary and secondary schools in the Attica region, including Athens, on Tuesday due to an approaching severe weather system. The decision, a precautionary measure, comes as forecasters predict heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
“A red alert has been issued for Attica. Taking into account the weather forecasts and the recommendations of the risk assessment committee, we have decided to close schools tomorrow,” Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias said, according to Kathimerini. He added that provisions are in place to facilitate online learning for students.
A previous snowstorm led to school closures across Greece earlier this year, highlighting the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather events.
The Athens municipal authority stated that civil protection services, municipal police, cleaning crews, and other technical teams are on high alert to respond to any emergencies. Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and refrain from parking vehicles in flood-prone areas until the adverse weather conditions subside. The announcement underscores the increasing frequency of extreme weather events impacting infrastructure and daily life across Southern Europe.
The National Meteorological Service of Greece issued a bulletin today warning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Central and Southern Greece, localized snowfall in mountainous areas of Thessaly and Macedonia, and strong wind gusts in various parts of the country.
Recent heavy rains have already prompted travel advisories in Greece due to the risk of flooding.
Storms of varying intensity are expected in the eastern part of the Peloponnese peninsula, as well as in the region of Evia Island, which is located near the mainland. The Sporades islands in the northern Aegean Sea, the northern and eastern Aegean islands near the Turkish coast, and the Dodecanese islands in the southeastern Aegean Sea are also expected to be affected by the inclement weather.
