Manchester City secured a vital 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday, remaining firmly in contention for the Premier League title, while Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the table with a win of their own. Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders played a key role in City’s win, scoring the opening goal and later revealing the tactical adjustments made by manager Pep Guardiola at halftime significantly impacted the match’s outcome. Reijnders’ insights offer a rare glimpse into the intensive, yet highly effective, methods employed by one of football’s most successful managers.

Tijjani Reijnders delivered a standout performance for Manchester City on Saturday, and later revealed a surprising insight about manager Pep Guardiola.

The Dutch international, who found the back of the net against Nottingham Forest, credited his manager with a significant role in his success.

The first half at City’s home ground proved a tightly contested affair, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. “We knew it would be a difficult match here,” Reijnders told TNT Sports. “I’d heard it would be, and I experienced that firsthand.”

Guardiola intervened at halftime, making tactical adjustments to both the formation and Reijnders’ individual role. “I was asked to play higher up the pitch,” Reijnders explained. “That forced them to decide who would mark me. My goal was a direct result of that change.”

Shortly after the restart, Reijnders broke the deadlock, finishing off a clever through ball from Rayan Cherki. It marked his fourth goal of the season. While Nottingham Forest managed to equalize, Cherki ultimately secured the victory for City with a late goal.

Reijnders was quick to acknowledge Cherki’s contribution. “He knows how to deliver those kinds of passes, and you have to be ready to finish them. He finds the space, so I just had to put it away.” However, Reijnders reserved his biggest praise for Guardiola, posting a photo with his manager on social media with the caption: ‘Just tell me before the game next time.’

Reijnders elaborated on his working relationship with Guardiola: “He’s incredibly intense, really intense. But he makes us all better players. I now see the game in a completely different light, and I just want to keep learning from him.”

The win keeps Manchester City firmly in the Premier League title race. Later Saturday, Arsenal defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1, extending their lead at the top of the table to two points. “This was a very important win for us,” Reijnders said. “We’re still right in the hunt, and games like these are the ones that ultimately make the difference.”
