Rising gas prices stemming from conflict in the Middle East are not only disrupting European electricity production, but are also increasing the cost of fertilizer, potentially impacting food prices.
Earlier this week, Norwegian fertilizer manufacturer Yara halted sales to several countries following a surge in gas prices.
Palle Borgström, chairman of the Swedish Farmers’ Association (Lantbrukarnas Riksförbund), explained that Europe has a limited number of fertilizer producers.
“There is simply a lack of competition,” Borgström said.
