Roberto Sánchez Challenges Keiko Fujimori to Regional Debates for 2026 Elections

Presidential candidate Roberto Sánchez has accepted a proposal from Keiko Fujimori to hold three debates during the electoral runoff, but he is pushing to move the conversations out of the capital and into the provinces.

In a move to decentralize the political discourse, Sánchez proposed holding decentralized debates across various regions of the country. As part of this strategy, Sánchez challenged Keiko Fujimori to begin the series in Chota, explicitly stating, “Empecemos en Chota” (“Let’s start in Chota”).

The development follows an initial suggestion from Fujimori to organize three separate debates for the second round of the election. Sánchez has since accepted the number of debates proposed by Fujimori, while simultaneously responding with the specific proposal to hold a debate in Chota.

The push for regional debates underscores a strategic effort to engage voters in the interior of the country, ensuring that the electoral conversation extends beyond the traditional political hubs. As the 2026 election cycle progresses, the location and format of these debates could play a critical role in how candidates connect with diverse regional constituencies.
