European defense ministers convened in Brussels to discuss continued support for Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of ensuring any future peace negotiations include both the Ukrainian population and the European Union. The meeting underscores the ongoing international effort to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities as the conflict with Russia continues.

Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles highlighted the unified stance of European nations, stating that Spain “has been there from the beginning and will be there for as long as necessary.” Robles’ comments came during a meeting that included European Union Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius, NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Šekerinska, and Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal.

Discussions focused on coordinating joint support efforts, with Spain committing to participate in five key initiatives. These include bolstering maritime domain awareness and contributing over 700 million euros through programs like SAFE and PURL, specifically aimed at addressing Ukraine’s defense needs.

Robles also stressed the need to strengthen strategic dual-use capabilities beyond military aid, specifically mentioning cybersecurity and technological innovation. She emphasized the challenges facing the European defense industry and the importance of equitable investment distribution to foster the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises, technological advancement, and skilled job creation.

Separately, Robles presided over an awards ceremony at the residence of Spain’s Permanent Representative to the North Atlantic Council, Federico de Torres. The event commemorated the 30th anniversary of Spain’s initial major deployment of armed forces on a NATO peacekeeping mission – the Implementation Force (IFOR) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Robles acknowledged the vital role of civilian personnel in safeguarding Spain’s interests within the EU and NATO, noting their continued contributions to both organizations.
