Prince Andrew Faces Renewed Calls to Relinquish Title Amid Epstein Revelations
Buckingham Palace and the British government are facing increased pressure to formally strip Prince Andrew of his royal title and residence following the emergence of new details regarding his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Following discussions with King Charles III, Prince Andrew agreed on Friday to cease using titles such as Duke of York, a move intended to distance the monarchy from ongoing controversy. However, he still technically retains the title of duke, originally bestowed by his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and remains a prince by birth. These calls for further action intensified after the release of emails indicating continued contact with Epstein beyond previous admissions, and ahead of the publication of Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s posthumous memoir.
Giuffre’s brother, Sky Roberts, urged the King to remove the title of prince, stating, “He shouldn’t be able to call himself one,” according to The Times of London. Prince Andrew, 65, previously settled a civil suit with Giuffre in 2022, acknowledging her suffering as a victim of sex trafficking, though he did not admit wrongdoing. The case stemmed from allegations that she was sexually assaulted by the prince when she was 17. This ongoing scrutiny highlights the challenges facing the monarchy as it attempts to navigate the legacy of these accusations – a situation that could further erode public trust.
Some politicians are advocating for a formal removal of the dukedom through parliamentary action. Scottish National Party lawmaker Stephen Flynn emphasized the anger felt by Giuffre’s family and the public, while the government indicated support for the palace’s decision but maintained that the matter is ultimately for the royal family to address. Additionally, London’s Metropolitan Police force stated it is “actively looking into” reports that Prince Andrew sought information to discredit Giuffre in 2011. Officials stated they are bracing for further revelations as Giuffre’s book, “Nobody’s Girl,” is published today, detailing alleged sexual encounters and claims of attempts to discredit her.
