Congressional Democrats, Los Angeles Leaders Demand Answers Over U.S. Citizen Detentions by Immigration Agents
Washington D.C. – Congressional Democrats and Los Angeles city officials are demanding a full investigation today into reports that over 170 U.S. citizens have been mistakenly detained by immigration enforcement agents, some allegedly subjected to physical abuse during the process.
The calls for investigation follow a ProPublica report detailing numerous cases of American citizens held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for periods ranging from hours to days. The report cites accounts of individuals being kicked, dragged, and otherwise mistreated while in custody. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement yesterday calling for “accountability” and expressing deep concern over the reported incidents, particularly within the city of Los Angeles.
“We are deeply disturbed by these reports and are committed to ensuring that the rights of all our residents are protected,” Mayor Bass said. Congressional Democrats have announced plans to launch a formal inquiry, seeking detailed data from the Department of Homeland Security regarding the number of U.S. citizens wrongly detained and the protocols in place to prevent such occurrences. This situation raises serious questions about the accuracy of databases used to identify individuals during immigration enforcement actions.
Officials stated that the investigations will focus on identifying the root causes of these errors and implementing safeguards to prevent future detentions of American citizens. The Department of Homeland Security has not yet issued a formal response but indicated it is reviewing the allegations and will cooperate with any congressional inquiries. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement maintains that it has strict policies in place to verify citizenship, but acknowledges the reported incidents are concerning.
Further investigations are expected to unfold in the coming weeks, with lawmakers vowing to hold accountable any agencies or individuals found responsible for the wrongful detentions.
